Water safety demonstration by Surrey Fire Service

More than 100 people have attended a water safety event staged by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

Staged at Virginia Water, it included rescue demonstrations and advice from experts.

The aim was to teach people what to do, should they find themselves in difficulty in deep water.

It was the culmination of a week-long campaign.

Station commander Lloyd Hatton said: “The primary aim is to prevent the amount of accidental deaths in water.

"We’ve seen an increase in the number of young people involved in events in the water that lead to injuries and fatalities.

"We want people to enjoy the water but do so safely, everything from being aware of cold water shock and floating to live if they were to enter the water."

The Service said it was keen to get the message to young people and parents, with the summer holidays around the corner.
