Family buys toy house in UK — and finds ‘large’ six-legged stowaway from Pennsylvania

A family in the United Kingdom got more than they expected when they purchased a toy and found a “large” six-legged stowaway inside, according to an animal rescue organization.

The family bought a toy playhouse from a store on Guernsey, an island in the English Channel. When they opened the box, they found a “very large beetle” inside, Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) said in an April 26 news release.

“We believe (it) is a Meloe Angusticollis or more commonly known as a short-winged blister beetle,” Steve Byrne, the manager of the organization, said in the release.

The toy house — and stowaway beetle — had been imported from Pennsylvania, the organization said. Pennsylvania is about 3,500 miles away from Guernsey.

“We believe (the beetle) is male as he keeps leaving oily spots which the males do to deter predators,” Byrne said. The beetle, nicknamed Angus, “is in quarantine at the GSPCA with a selection of greens.”

A photo shared by the organization on Facebook shows the black beetle in a container.

The organization said it is still trying to figure out what to do with the imported animal.

“We see all sorts of things arrive at the GSPCA and we never know what will be next,” Byrne said. “We’ve never had this type of beetle before.”
