Charity hands out funds to community groups
Over £570,000 has been awarded to dozens of community groups.
The money was awarded to 93 local groups by the charity Cumbria Community Foundation.
It included £4,300 to help add a sustainably powered mobile charging port to an old phone box in Clifton which already houses a book swap service and community noticeboard.
Other groups that will receive funding from the charity include a community café and a bowls club.
South Lakeland Action on Climate Change received £20,000 for its community café project in Kendal.
The volunteer-led project collects waste food from supermarkets, shops and eateries which is then turned into meals offered to locals on a pay what you can basis.
The money will help the team install a new kitchen, said Stacy Hurley at the charity.
Carlisle Subscription Bowling Club received £890 for new equipment, with the aim of attracting younger members.
Club secretary David Whitfield said: “The grant funding will encourage and equip people of all ages to come and try bowling free of charge."
