Too Young for Facebook, Government and Tech Go Head-to-Head, and a Missing Social Media Personality

Though it seems like almost everyone's on Facebook, one group is outlawed from joining the site: children under the age of 13. CEO Mark Zuckerberg sounds like he might want to change that. When talking about the age restriction, Zuckerberg reportedly said, "That will be a fight we take on at some point. My philosophy is that for education you need to start at a really, really young age." The social networking CEO got a backlash for the comments on Twitter. But Zuckerberg says his words were taken out of context and clarified that Facebook is "not working on the ability for people under the age of 13 to sign up." He did say, however, that Facebook might eventually explore the possibility.

Wondering why you might have seen the hashtag "#EG8" tweeted more than 25,000 times yesterday? It wasn't a typo for the G8, which is bringing world leaders together in France today. Yesterday the EG8, or Electronic G8, a conference of global technology leaders that was hosted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The leaders planned to discuss the future of technology, but the conversation kept going back to Internet privacy, a divisive topic. Sarkozy said, "The Internet is the new frontier, a territory to conquer. But it cannot be the Wild West." Google CEO Eric Schmidt shot back, "Technology will move faster than governments." Schmidt added, "So don't legislate before you understand the consequences." While the conference did open up dialogue, it did not lead to any significant agreements.

A social media star is missing. 17-year-old Will Norton was sucked from his car by the tornado that ripped through Joplin, Missouri, when driving back from his high school graduation this Sunday. Will is a YouTube sensation, thanks to the comedic videos he posts under the moniker "Willdabeast." His family has set up a Facebook page to try to find him. It gained more than 30,000 members in two days. The rescue effort continues in Joplin, and Norton is still missing.
