New Facebook game rewards winner with real gold

Games like World of Warcraft encourage players to obtain as much fictional gold currency as possible, but games that pay out actual gold are much harder to come by. A new Facebook venture by America Express does just that, and one lucky grand prize winner will score over $15,000 worth of solid gold bullion. It's called The Great American Express Gold Rush and it is running from now until August 5.

The game is based on trading virtual gold between various world territories. You must jet around the globe and compare gold rates to find the best bargains. Raising money through your deals will inch you ever closer to the top of the leaderboards. Whoever has secured the most profit when the competition is over will be declared the winner, laying claim a treasure trove of actual gold.

American Express has organized this ambitious competition in order to drum up some awareness of its new Preferred Rewards Gold Card, which, if you don't happen to win the big prize, might allow you a bit of a shopping spree to soften the blow. Currently, while the game can be played by anyone with a Facebook account, only residents of the U.K. are eligible to win prizes. American Express is also quick to point out that the market conditions used in the game aren't to be relied on for investment purposes, though we'd hope that bit of info is a no-brainer.
