Jon Stewart spars with Chris Wallace on ‘Fox News Sunday’: You are dead wrong; I’m a comedian, not an activist

In another of his recent forays onto the Fox News lineup he routinely lambastes on "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart sat for an extended interview on "Fox News Sunday."

During a long, often heated interview with Chris Wallace on the broadcast--Stewart's first appearance on a Sunday morning talk show--the pair debated the "Daily Show" host's contention (shared by plenty of other critics) that Fox News is a "propaganda delivery system" operating under the guise of a news organization.Stewart said that MSNBC is attempting to imitate Fox News for liberals, but is not nearly as "relentlessly activist" as Fox News.

Wallace countered that Fox News is merely a counterweight to liberal media bias--citing the Sarah Palin email "dump" that Stewart, himself, criticized as proof of the New York Times' liberal agenda. But the funnyman disagreed.

"The bias of the mainstream media is towards sensationalism, conflict and laziness," Stewart said. "Not towards a liberal agenda."

"If you're saying they are relentlessly partisan, why haven't they backed away from Weiner?" he continued. "They jumped into the Weiner pool with such delight and such relish."

The thing conservatives "will never understand," Stewart said, is that "Hollywood--yeah they're liberal, but that's not their primary motivating force. I'm not an activist. I'm a comedian. My comedy is informed by an ideology, but I'm not an ideologue."

Stewart added: "Being a comedian is much harder than what you do."

Later, Wallace told Stewart, "I think you want to be a political player."

"You are dead wrong," Stewart said.
